By qualifiers, I mean words like; "some", "many", "it appears that", "maybe", "I think", "it seems", etc.
Not doing so when referring to a group or class of people, will immediately label you as a bigot in the eyes/ears of your readers/listeners and not doing so when stating facts, can label you as a careless or dogmatic thinker.
You should never or very rarely refer to a whole race of people, a religious sect, a political party, or any large group as "them" or "they" because what you are saying very rarely refers to every member of the group.
We think of too many groups as all having the beliefs, qualities, or characteristics of a few of their more radical members. A pertinent example is Muslims. Most Muslims don't interpret the Koran as telling them to kill all non-believers. Most Muslims loosely interpret what their Koran says and don't advocate Jihad. For that matter the King James version of the Bible could just as easily be interpreted as saying to kill all non-believers but it is usually given a looser interpretation.
Hello..A valid point!..There are timesI have found using something like 'may'..keeps me away from appearing judgmental and says 'just a view that is many times pertinent'. On this blog..a lot of times I am addressing my view on the issue in the posting..not the persons viewpoint in any criticism. The only way I can state an unequivicable 'fact' is to voice an opinion..or a considered opinion. Religious states, I find, in extreme times,to be impractical and many times overemotional or violent. The examples are many and very sad. I am no scholar on the koran. Certainly the etymological apps of the word alone..are probably worthy of a paper. In such extreme times..belief is founded..but for extremism. 'Discovery is founded, many times, in conflict. Conflict should never be the product of discovery'. I have found some of the most telling, for me, postings, that procure and use fact, take a long time for the person to say, 'I believe this'..using the authority of a past 'thinker' is certainly a good tool..I just do not know that these times..indeed any time..has a precident..just 'something akin to'..anyway..Happy Weekend and I do give thanks for the civil rights I served for..and many died for..Peace Tony
